Spring in Oregon
Hey everyone!
It’s spring here in Oregon and I’m so grateful for the warming weather. I’m also grateful for all the spring flowers and flowering trees. The countryside is speckled with things like daffodils and cherry trees. When it comes to daffodils I’m always surprised at the variety of daffodils that exist. Small, large, yellow, white, or mixed are all out there just waiting to be found. There’s also been a decent number of dutch people who have made Oregon their home so there’s plenty of tulips as well. I’m just getting familiar with all these kinds of nuances but from what I understand there’s a number of different flower festivals in the area.
Gratitude
As we go through this pandemic one of the things I need to practice is being grateful. There’s plenty to worry and be unhappy about but there’s also plenty in my life to be grateful for every day. A great example of that is the cherry trees that I saw down across from the Oregon State Capital Building yesterday. The trees were damaged in an ice storm earlier this year but seeing them yesterday was amazing. The thing I think was even more amazing was that we drove past them last weekend and there was none of them out yet.
As many creatures on this planet, we’ve developed to have that fight or flight response. So many times we’re on the watch for something to get us. This leads to anxiety and paranoia but here again, we need to focus on what is true or real. I have no one or nothing out to get me. Hence I should be grateful for a peaceful life. I have a job, money, food, and shelter. All the things we need in life to create a stable environment in order to thrive. I am grateful to be in a stable environment that allows me to thrive and develop as a person.
Another thing to be grateful for are people in my life who love me. I have people in my live who would give me the shirt of their back, a place to stay or if it come to it fight to protect me. Those are all things we need to appreciate and be grateful for in our lives. This isn’t just something that is a given. We have to earn this from our family, friends and acquaintances. It’s nothing to scoff at, that’s for sure.
So I’m grateful to have beauty, stability and support in these trying time and I’m glad to help others who may need some of those same things. It’s always good to put a little of that back out into the world. If you only take and never give well, it’s going to run out sometime in the future if that’s what everyone did. Smile and think about what’s going right in your life. We all know there are things that don’t go right but I think we’re amazed when we take a step back to examine the things that are going right.
Learning
I recently signed up on Codecademy to learn a new skill. I graduated back in 2002 with an Information Technology degree from DeVry University but I’ve not used it in the past 15 years. I thought it was about time to get back into it and check out what’s changed. It never hurts to have more skills in life. Skills create options and options are good when it comes to a career or even just staying employed.
I started the Code Foundations skill path which is starting with teaching me Python code. I’ve only taken one lesson so far but it’s been pretty easy thus far. I mean when you’re learning those first ‘Hello World’ lessons they’re not normally to difficult, right? So I’m looking forward to exploring that more and seeing what I can learn.
As I learn more I’ll try to incorporate it into my site. Since I have the site I think it would be a good place to make practical use of these new skills. I’ll be sure to post those pages or tools as I create them.
Well till later my friends and remember to look for the good in life. Quiet your mind and wait for the clouds to part and let the sun shine down upon you.
