My top 3 picks for an electric vehicle

Here are my top 3 picks for an electric vehicle. I LOVE learning about EVs (electric vehicles). I like to listen to the podcast EV News Daily. Martin gives such great updates on the market and the EVs coming out. He is in the UK so what he has available to him is much different than what we have here in the US. I think the problem I see is that here in the US we don’t have many affordable options. The options we have aren’t affordable or comfortable. The options are getting better but the affordable part is still out there a way.

Options aren’t our only problem. Of course, there’s also just a general mentality. Americans don’t like change and fear giving up on their fossil-fuel vehicles. We even have several companies that are looking at replacing commercial vehicles here in the US which I think will help drive the conversion even more. Once people start driving electric commercial vehicles and see the benefits and performance I’d like to think they’ll change their minds.

Think about it. What brands here in the US sell EVs? Let’s see if you list them out and what the base price looks like you can see most American households probably couldn’t afford an EV. Then there’s comfort and a whole host of other things to consider. Out of the 14 brands that I could find, only 4 had EVs under $40,000. For a lot of American households that are just not affordable.

I used this Car and Driver article to list out those brands and their base prices. Some companies may have more than one model so I chose the lowest base price to populate my table.

#3 Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 has some great styling, amazing charge times, and what looks to be great functionality. Of course, the Kia EV6 is out yet but it holds a lot of promise. Unfortunately, it’s not really affordable at this time. The First Edition has a price tag of $58,500 MSRP.

They hope to start shipping the Kia EV6 in January 2022. Kia is used to launching so I imagine they’ll have these out on time if not a little early. Their one challenge may be this chip shortage. With chips controlling so much of our current automobiles one can only assume chips are even more important to an EV.

The Kia EV6 has a target of an impressive 300 miles of range. They still have some more testing to do but since they are the sister company to Hyundai you can bet they’ll deliver. Hyundai has EVs currently so they are learning from those models.

#2 Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is definitely catching my eye! I like the bold style and lines of this car. The car isn’t on the market yet here in the US but it is slated to roll out in the fall of 2021. We have seen this car being delivered in some European countries so that lends to Hyundai meeting their planned delivery this fall.

The Ioniq 5 will come in 3 trims, SE, SEL, and Limited. The rear-wheel-drive models are estimated to have 300 miles of range. If you get the performance dual motor all-wheel drive that model has an estimated 269 miles of range. The good thing with Hyundai is that this isn’t their first EV so they’ve been able to learn from the prior models. All indications are that they know how to manage the battery life and bring in the numbers they publish when it comes to range.

#1 Fisker Ocean

Now this car has it all! It has great style and they are aiming to make it affordable. As a matter of fact affordability I think has been a major point in the development of this EV. Fisker is a relatively new car company. Don’t let that fool you though. Henrik Fisker has been developing cars for a long time. Previously he came out with the Fisker Karma but it didn’t sell well here in the US. How he’s making the most environmentally friendly, sustainable car on the market.

The Fisker Ocean is targeting a base price of $37,499. This would be one of if not the best cars for the value when delivered. He’s also considering how cars are leased by creating more of a subscription model for the Ocean.

The Ocean has some interesting features. One cool feature is that the roof will have solar panels built into it. So your car will be able to charge during the day. Another cool feature is what they call California mode. In California mode, 9 windows (including the back) roll down for maximum airflow. That sure seems like something nice for summer.

The Ocean is looking to have a range of 250 to 300 miles. Fitting nicely into the market to deliver a great experience and optimum functionality.
