Electric cars … yeah, while sheltering in place I’ve been thinking about electric cars. I can surf the internet while locked down at home. I can dream about driving an electric car. Electric cars are something I’ve had my eye on for a while. There are new companies coming along all the time with an electric car. Some are traditional automotive companies while others are startups.
Ford Mach-E
On domestic company to try their hand at building an electric car is Ford. Ford is coming out with the Mach-E in 2021. Taking their trademark Mustang brand and expanding it to this new crossover electric vehicle. The Mach-E seems pretty competitive to the Tesla Model Y. It’s a slightly lower price point. The Mach-E has a projected 300-mile range vs the 316-mile range of the Model Y. Ford has 5 configurations of the Mach-E ranging from $43,895 to $60,500. Looks good and I’m seeing a lot of good reviews from automotive journalist and enthusiast.

Fisker Ocean
Then you have a start-up like Fisker who has made cars before but not in a production environment as you or I would think of it. I have to say though it looks like a sweet ride. The Fisker Ocean is an electric SUV that’s environmentally friendly. The projected range of the Ocean is 250 to 300 miles. The SUV has a vegan interior and made with recycled materials. They’re aiming at a more reasonably priced $37,499. One of the interesting twists I’ve heard from them though is that they’re thinking of the car more like we think of our phones. They’re aiming at more leasing and doing upgrades over the air like your smartphone. With that lease, the payments would be approximately $379 per month.
Tesla Model Y
If you’re going to talk about electric cars you’ve got to talk about the big dog Tesla. They’ve released their 5th electric vehicle, the Model Y. Now Telsa has been delivering electric cars since 2008. They started with a sexy roadster model but then rolled out the luxury sedan the Model S in 2012. The Model X SUV with the amazing falcon doors, the affordable Model 3, and now the bulked up brother of Model 3 the Model Y follow the Model S. If you want a performance car the Telsa cars are definitely all about performance. Conventional thinking is that electric cars will be slow and sluggish. Manufacturers are making sure their electric cars are fast and nimble.
What are your thoughts on electric cars? Personally I can’t wait to see how they perform and their reliability can be established. The fossil fuel industry will do their best to sabotage their progress I’m sure but with what we know of climate change, it needs to happen sooner rather than later. Everyone is looking to get into the market. Electric vehicles aren’t just for the average driver either. Electric vehicles are being considered for commercial applications also. Semi and delivery trucks are a big market that’s being investigated. We didn’t even talk about Rivian who’s received a large order for delivery vehicles for Amazon.
