Welcome
It’s Sunday once again and many of us are preparing to go back to work tomorrow. It’s been beautiful weather here in the Portland Metro area. Today I went to the Jackson Bottom Wetlands to walk through the park. While I visited I could see many birds enjoying the water throughout the park. This against the warm sun was a nice way to spend the afternoon.
While walking around the park I listened to an episode of Throughline. It a history podcast looking back at history to understand today. The episode I listened to was about the right to vote and the life of Frederick Douglass.
I’ve not read any of his works but as I listened to the podcast they read some of his works. He was quite the orator. For a man who was raised a slave only to escape slavery and establish himself as a freeman.
As I listened today I thought I need to check out some of Frederick Douglass’s writings and learn about his life. For some who feel like they can’t overcome the challenges in their lives to hear Frederick’s story should shift our own beliefs. If there’s a will. there’s a way. This is how we should think about making a change in our lives.
A tidbit that was mentioned during the podcast that I didn’t know about was that the Republicans were the one who drove the freeing of slaves. Of course they had an ulterior motive. The Republicans wanted the slaves to vote for their party. I see not much has changed in their methods.
Frederick Douglass considered himself a Republican. This may seem strange but remember those are the people that freed the slaves. He always believed that voting was a natural right. Voting was a basic right of people.
It was interesting to hear that he was born into slavery, saw the end of slavery, then saw the Jim Crow era start in the south. He lived through several important periods in history in his lifetime. Seeing freedom become a reality and then to have rights snatched away.
Helstrom on Hulu
I caught this new Marvel Television show on Hulu. It’s a supernatural good versus evil show. I like the show. I think it has an engaging plot. You can’t just start in the middle of the season. I liked the actor choices and think they fit the characters perfectly.
If you like good versus evil, demons, and superhuman powers then I think you’ll enjoy this television show as well. It’s the first season is out for binge watch on Hulu. As for season 2 it’s not gotten the green light yet. We’ll have to wait and see if it gets a follow up after a great cliffhanger ending.
Wrap up
Everyone stay safe and get out there and #vote! It’s our civic duty. Voting is an important part of our democracy and it shouldn’t be taken for granted. People hold the United States in high esteem for our right to vote. Countries have come to blows over it and revolutions have been held.
COVID-19 is surging out there. Stay safe, keep social distancing, wash your hands and wear a mask. All those are important but wearing a mask is probably the most important. This helps stop the spread of the virus. Keep people safe by wearing your mask.
